by Nicholas Forrest, 02/10/14

Influential South London-based contemporary art organization Gasworks has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the development of two new artists’ studios, raising the total number from 11 to 13.

The campaign has attracted the attention of Art Basel which has selected the campaign to be part of its new Crowdfunding Initiative, launched in conjunction with Kickstarter to help support outstanding non-commercial art projects.

For the last two years Gasworks has been working to raise the £2 million it needs to purchase and refurbish its home of 20 years, which it has been offered at a reduced price. Reaching the target will allow Gasworks to upgrade its facilities and create more opportunities for artists and the public.

On offer for contributors to the Kickstarter campaign are a number of fantastic rewards including a Joel Croxson tote bag, Anthea Hamilton tea towel, and artworks by Claire Hooper, Jonathan Murphy, Paul Simon Richards, Tai Shani, Seb Patane, Pio Abad, Tonico Lemos Auad, Alexandre da Cunha, Jonathan Murphy, and Daniel Sinsel.

Established in 1994, Gasworks is a contemporary art organization that houses eleven artists’ studios and offers a programme of exhibitions and events, artists’ residencies, international fellowships, and educational projects.

Gasworks has an esteemed alumni that includes the likes of Chris Ofili, Yinka Shonibare, Goshka Macuga, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Song Dong, Hassan Khan, Alexandre da Cunha, Cinthia Marcelle, Subodh Gupta, Hurvin Anderson, and Tonico Lemos Auad, to name a few.
