New York Post ART ATTACK

August 20th, 2005

The press release is at pains to make clear that not all the artists in this show, though male, are gay. Could have fooled me, with all these men in bed or getting into bed singly or in pairs. Be that as it may, the exhibition contains works by some of the most exuberantly gay artists of recent years, like Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar and David Hockney. These varied paintings, drawings and watercolors span many years, and range from the nearly Old Master technique of Paul Cadmus to the dense photographs of Andres Serano and Hockney’s much freer drawing technique. The exhibition is timed to coincide with Jonathan Weinberg’s
book of the same title, soon to be published by Abrams.

Through Sept. 10, Mary Ryan, 24 W. 57th St., (212)397-0669
