RHONA BITNER

By Ken Johnson

(212) 229-2700 (through Feb. 1). Ms. Bitner resuscitates one of modem art’s most hackneyed subjects: the circus. Her small color photographs of clowns, trapeze artists and hoop dancers isolated in the spotlight have a jewel-like concentration and are oddly touching. They are like tiny personifications of our own selves working desperately to please an invisible audience (Johnson).
