The Big Issue, Snapshot
— By CHARLES HOWGEGO
Two bodies of work by photographer O Zhang hint at the new possibilities open to young girls in a more ‘open’ China. Her first series, of Chinese girls enjoying their rural upbringings, appears to suggest new opportunities are on the horizon. This is counterpointed by a series of pictures of Chinese girls and the New York men who have adopted them. The relationships are microcosms of East-West relations, with suggestions of more comfortable surroundings and upbringings in the New York photos. Is there a power struggle here, between East and West? Or is the point of it merely a triumph of humanity in an ever-shrinking world? My Little Girl by 0 Zhang,
