Pitch: Ori Gersht
By Simon Morley

“Kevin Keegan and the England team ask you to respect the national anthems of both teams. Thank you.” So read the notices at Wembley Stadium in the Israeli artist Ori Gersht’s giant photograph of a 360-degree panorama just before kick-off during the England v Brazil match in May. The artist placed a rotating camera in the centre of the pitch and this is the result. Very strange it is too. The stadium roof does a serpentine across the top, one goal post is centre, while the other is sliced in two. We see the teams like a long line of nervous kids and their minders, who stood in a circle around the centre. Unnerving and euphoric, this is photography at its most inventive.
